Self-belief can seem like the holy grail when you don’t have it. And, in all honesty, it is pretty amazing. With self-belief you can navigate your way through just about any situation, regardless of how hard it is. No, it won’t be perfect but you won’t give up on yourself or be hard on yourself. It’s like having the very best coach in your corner all the time. When you’re resilient, self-belief comes naturally – which is why it’s a big part of what I do with clients as a resilience coach. It’s also something I have a lot of experience of – and these are the things I wish I’d known about it sooner.
1. Nothing changes for long if your mindset remains the same
No matter how desperately you want to believe in yourself, you’ll keep pinging back to self-doubt if that’s what underpins your mindset. But change that underlying mindset and all things are possible.
2. Self-belief doesn’t happen overnight
And it’s not naturally occurring. It comes from building trust with yourself and intentionally taking action again and again.
3. Being able to fail is critical for self-belief
You will jump if you know how to land – or fall. If failure doesn’t phase you this clears the path for self-belief and success. If you have a fixed mindset that fears failure you’ll never have self-belief.
4. You can start building self-belief like this..
..by doing one thing you’re not sure you can every single day. The big challenge will be pushing through the voice that is telling you it’s not possible – or stupid to try. If you can’t do that then you won’t progress.
5. That voice that tells you not to try is your inner critic
If you’ve never done any inner critic work and yours is loud – or the only voice you hear – then that’s the place to start where building self-belief is concerned.
What all this comes down to is this:
The source of your self-belief is your mind. From uprooting the inner critic to getting comfortable with failure, all this is mindset work. If you don’t have much self-belief right now then mindset change is how you’re going to get it.
If you’re ready for a mindset that serves and nurtures the kind of self-belief you thought you’d never have then you are ready for Change Your Mindset – my resilience coaching programme.
This is 6 weeks of resilience coaching, live sessions and a mindset plan that will transform how you think, what you believe – and consequently how you act because of what you believe you’re capable of.
