I saw this quote recently that said, “I haven’t felt like myself recently. I must be growing.” And I just thought what a beautiful way to look at the parts of life that frustrate us.

Our lives are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves. And you can choose which stories you give your power to.

I’m not talking about that “good vibes only” BS. This isn’t about ignoring the pain. It’s about validating that something sucks, while refusing to let it make you feel helpless.

What if not feeling like yourself is actually proof that you’re changing for the better? Your discomfort isn’t evidence that you are broken. It’s just the shadow before your sunrise. Something new is about to emerge.

Panic is often the default reaction when we start to change

When we feel disconnected from who we used to be, our default reaction is panic. We assume we are failing, sliding backward, or losing our grip. We desperately try to claw our way back to our old baseline because the old baseline felt safe. But safety and growth rarely live in the same house.

That unsettling, skin-crawling feeling of “not belonging in your own life” isn’t a malfunction. It is the friction of your old self resisting the person you are becoming.

Expansion requires stretch

Think about it: you cannot expand without stretching, and stretching hurts. The version of you that handled your past is simply too small to house your future. So, the old skin begins to crack. The routines that used to comfort you suddenly feel stifling. The conversations you used to enjoy now feel hollow.

It’s terrifying because you are stuck in the messy middle – you are no longer who you were, but you aren’t quite yet who you are going to be.

You don’t need to manifest your way out of the dark

Toxic positivity wants you to slap a smiley face sticker over those cracks. It tells you to manifest your way out of the dark. But true resilience requires us to sit in the dark and acknowledge that it is pitch black.

It’s perfectly okay to say, “This hurts, I am exhausted, and I don’t know what comes next.” The shift happens when you stop letting the darkness dictate your worth. You can acknowledge the pain without letting it write the ending of your story.

So, if you woke up today feeling a little lost, a little foreign to yourself, take a deep breath. Stop treating your evolution like a crisis. You are not losing your mind; you are outgrowing your old environment. The narrative doesn’t have to be “I am falling apart.” It can be “I am breaking open.”

The shadow is temporary, but the sunrise is inevitable. Trust the friction. Lean into the discomfort. Something new is about to emerge, and they are going to be magnificent.
