“Why don’t I get the opportunities I feel like I deserve in life?”
Whether or not you’ve said it out loud, I bet there have been moments when you’ve thought this. I’ve heard versions of it in coaching sessions many times.
The answer?
Well, it could be complex. There is no denying that factors like structural inequality, generational wealth, immature parenting and discrimination all play a part.
But on a very basic level the answer for many of us is not because you’re not capable, unlucky or bad at selling yourself. More likely, it’s because you believe something about yourself that is holding you back.
E.g. I’m not good enough. I don’t deserve it. I can’t do it. Sound familiar?
Your mind will never prove you wrong..
When we buy into beliefs like this (even if we don’t realise we are doing it), it creates a confirmation bias that means your mind only looks for evidence that will confirm what you believe.
So, the most amazing opportunities could be right under your nose and you just wouldn’t see them. (Ask me about the Reticular Activating System if you want to know which part of the brain is doing this).
So make sure you’re clear on those limiting beliefs
The solution? Get clear on those limiting beliefs. If they are blindly drive your thoughts, actions and choices, change them.
Stop living in out of date ideas about who you are and what you’re capable of.
I get it. If it was as easy as deciding to change those beliefs today, nobody would feel like this ever again, right?
