If you’ve ever looked at someone else and thought:
“Why does life seem easier for them?”
“Why do they just get on with things while I overthink everything?”
“Why am I still stuck when I’ve done so much work on myself?”
I want to start by saying something that might surprise you. Part of the answer isn’t in your head it’s just in your reality.
And no, that doesn’t make you a victim. Because while mindset matters, so do the conditions you started with.
Some people really do have advantages – growing up around emotional stability, being taught that mistakes are safe, feeling supported, having relationships that made vulnerability feel normal, being shown how to regulate emotions, growing up believing opportunities belonged to them.
Those things create capacity – and capacity changes everything.
Why changing your life isn’t about willpower
We tend to assume that people who change their lives are somehow more disciplined, motivated or confident. But confidence isn’t usually where change starts – capacity is.
Your nervous system is where capacity resides and your nervous system has one job: to keep you safe. Not happy or fulfilled or thriving. Just safe.
And if something feels unsafe, whether that’s starting a business, making new friends, leaving a relationship, speaking up or becoming visible, your nervous system will often hit the brakes. You might see this as being lazy or somehow unable to do it. But it’s simply because uncertainty and change don’t feel safe to your nervous system. And if you don’t have the tools to manage that then self-sabotage is the inevitable result.
SO – please note: self-sabotage isn’t evidence that you don’t want something enough. It’s evidence that your system doesn’t yet have the capacity to hold it.
Why some people seem to find life easier
One of the biggest revelations people have in resilience coaching is that life genuinely feels easier when you’re living with a regulated nervous system. Because when you’re dysregulated, everything feels bigger.
Small setbacks feel catastrophic.
Decisions feel overwhelming.
Shame feels unbearable.
You spend so much energy managing your reactions to life that there’s very little left for actually living it. It’s a bit like walking around with a burn on your arm – everything that touches it hurts.
Someone with more capacity experiences the same events very differently. They don’t necessarily have fewer problems but they recover faster. They don’t spend three days in shame because of one awkward conversation or abandon themselves every time they make a mistake.
They don’t assume discomfort means danger – and that’s the big one.
Stop asking “What’s wrong with me?”
Assuming that you are the problem – or using words like ‘lazy,’ ‘weak,’ ‘undisciplined,’ or ‘broken’ to describe yourself is where everything starts to go wrong. Because shame doesn’t create change. In fact, shame triggers your threat response, which instantly makes change harder.
Self-compassion is what you need here – this isn’t letting yourself off the hook but creating the conditions that make change possible. Because you don’t become someone who changes their life by hating yourself into transformation.
So how do you become someone who changes their life?
Not through more information or forcing yourself or waiting until you feel ready.
You build capacity.
You understand your nervous system.
You learn emotional regulation.
You stop making shame your primary motivation.
You start listening to yourself instead of abandoning yourself.
If you begin to do those things (all of which we cover in resilience coaching) slowly, the things that once felt impossible begin to feel uncomfortable but doable.
People who change their lives aren’t fearless and they aren’t more deserving or somehow better than you. They just have the capacity to hold more uncertainty, visibility and discomfort. More of life in general.
That can be you too because capacity can be built through a process like resilience coaching.
Because resilience isn’t the absence of fear but the ability to feel fear and keep moving anyway.
What you experience today doesn’t have to be what you experience a year from now. You are not stuck with the blueprint you inherited.
If you’re ready to build a different one then you’re in exactly the right place. Book a free intro call with me and we’ll chat about how.
