Do you know what’s embarrassing? Nothing. Embarrassment is made up. Do your thing.
Seriously. Embarrassment is just a collective hallucination we all agreed to participate in because our caveman ancestors were terrified of getting kicked out of the tribe for dropping a berry.
But guess what? It’s 2026. You aren’t going to get exiled to the wilderness because you tripped on the pavement, stuttered in a meeting, or posted something that got three likes.
The next time you feel that hot wave of cringe, remember these three things:
- The Spotlight Effect is lying to you. Everyone is the main character in their own mind. They aren’t thinking about your awkward moment; they are busy thinking about theirs.
- Cringe is the price of admission. If you never do anything cringe, it means you’re staying completely still. Look foolish. Try the thing.
- The 10-10-10 Rule. Will this matter in 10 minutes? Maybe. 10 months? Unlikely. 10 years? Absolutely not.
Stop letting imaginary points in a game nobody is playing dictate your life. Drop the script, do your thing, and let everyone else worry about their own berries.
I know that embarrassment and shame can feel very very real. But they’re only real for you if you choose to let them be. In resilience coaching we’re giving you more control over your mindset – over whether you let things like embarrassment sit with you or whether you just move on from them and don’t let them weigh you down. And yes, even if you’re shy, a blusher or drowning in shame this is possible for you too.
