Emotions are signposts. They carry vital data – but we can only access it when we stop trying to outrun the feelings we don’t want, or shaming ourselves for having them.

All emotions are acceptable. All emotions are healthy. Every single one has a message for you. (Except shame – which is less of an emotion and more of a taught response or control mechanism).

Here is what your inner compass is trying to say:

💧 Sadness

You are healing. You are processing a loss or letting go of something that mattered.

You need connection. It is a signal to slow down, rest, and seek comfort from others.

You care deeply. It reflects the value of what was lost or what is missing.

You don’t feel seen. You’re not being your authentic self and it hurts.

🌀 Anxiety

You feel unsafe. Feeling uncertain, or not in control, is making your nervous system react.

You need grounding. It is a call to pull your awareness out of the “what-ifs” and back into the present moment.

You are facing the unknown. It often shows up when you are stepping out of your comfort zone.

🌊 Overwhelm

You are carrying too much. Your current capacity does not match your current workload or emotional load.

You need boundaries. It is a sign to say “no,” delegate, or pull back, especially if you’re absorbing too much from the people around you.

This often happens in times of transition. So much newness, or change, all at once can feel like too much.

🔥 Anger

Your boundaries were crossed. Someone or something has violated your values or space.

You witness an injustice. It acts as a fierce protector of your self-worth or the safety of others.

You need to take action. It provides a surge of passionate energy meant to correct a wrong.

🧊 Numbness

Your system is overloaded. You have hit your emotional capacity, and your brain has turned down the volume to protect you.

You need deep safety. It is a sign that you need a gentle environment to slowly defrost.

You are disconnected. Often this means you’ve been suppressing hard feelings for too long.

🔋 Resentment

You are ignoring your own needs. You are likely saying “yes” to others while saying “no” to yourself.

Your expectations are unexpressed. You are holding onto hidden terms that others haven’t agreed to.

You need an honest conversation. It is a sign to communicate your boundaries clearly and directly.

💥 Frustration

Your progress is blocked. You are hitting a wall or trying to force something that isn’t working.

You need a new approach. It is a prompt to take a step back, reassess, and change your strategy.

You still have hope. You only feel frustrated because you believe a better outcome is possible.

💚 Jealousy

You are seeing your own potential. It highlights a desire, trait, or achievement that you actually want for yourself.

You feel a lack. It points to an area where you feel insecure or unsupported.

You need direction. It acts as a mirror showing you exactly where to aim your focus next.

💡 Quick Tip: How to Feel Your Feelings

Feeling your feelings is how we move emotions through after we’ve extracted the data – and don’t get stuck in them. In my 7+ years as a resilience coach I’ve noticed how few of us actually know how to feel our feelings. So, here is my quick guide to doing that:

Name it: Explicitly identify the exact feeling (e.g., “I am feeling resentment”).

Validate it: Give yourself permission to feel it without judgment (“It makes sense that I feel this way”).

Remember it’s temporary: Remind yourself that emotions are like waves—they peak, and then they pass.

Move it through: Flush the residual energy out of your body using movement, stretching, or conscious breathwork.

Emotions are physical energy and you can’t just put them in a box or ignore them. Well you can but there are consequences for that, from physical illness to distress further down the line.

Plus your nervous system will read that as a constant state of threat because a regulated nervous system is one that feels emotions, not one that doesn’t.

More often than not, our emotions hold incredibly useful information about what we should do next – if we only stop to listen.

Emotional regulation is one of my 5 pillars of resilience coaching. Ready to change how you handle your emotions? Let’s chat.
