If you’ve got to a place where you are really fed up of something or really desperate for change, you’re not going to get there by doing the things you’ve always done. You’re going to have to tear up the rule book and do it differently.
And you can.. Anyone can. But there’s one way that you’re making this impossible – and making your life harder and it..
..isn’t actually your fault. Well, not until you realise that it’s holding you back and don’t do anything about it anyway. That’s because the one thing that makes everything incredibly – and unnecessarily – tough is what’s in your head. Your mindset. If you’re ready to tear up the rulebook then you’re going to have to start with what’s in there.
Your mindset isn’t actually your fault..
Given how much of our mindset comes from external sources this might seem a bit unfair. You haven’t chosen to be like this. Nevertheless change needs to come from you. Which can feel like an enormous task at first. Because the thing about a mindset that tells you life is hard or things are impossible is that it is also telling you that changing that mindset is hard or impossible too. Luckily for us, we also lie to ourselves constantly and once you realise that the negativity is the biggest lie of all, you’re laughing.
Mindset is like a bag..
Think of your mindset like this: a favourite bag you’ve had all your life. Over the years you’ve put things into it (embarrassing moments, deep hurts, trauma, maladaptive behaviours, fears) and other people have done the same (a micromanaging boss who minimised your confidence, a parent who told you anger was unacceptable, an ex-friend who said you’re too sensitive). By 25 most of us are carrying a lot.
Question: aren’t you tired of carrying all that sh*t around with you?
God I was.
All those things stopped me making connections, held me back from what would have been good for me and meant I lived with an inner world ruled by self-hatred. Changing my mindset was like putting a clearer, brighter, rosier lens into my glasses – I could suddenly see better and the view was empowering and hopeful.
How to Change Your Mindset
There is a simple process for changing your mindset and it looks like this:
- Review
- Reset
- Reframe
- Strengthen
- Shift
- Thrive
These are the 6 stages of the mindset plan we work through on Change Your Mindset – my 6-week coaching programme, which starts on 5th Feb. Most of us know if our current mindset isn’t serving us. And if that’s you then you’ll also know that the change that is necessary needs to come from you. What this 6-week programme does is give you the tools to do that. From 1:1 sessions with me to live group sessions that focus on the biggest mindset obstacles (negativity, limits and self-doubt), it’s all in there.
Change Your Mindset is a simple way to start creating a new reality in your head that will ripple out to every area of life, from relationships to career and purpose. But, whether or not you sign up, remember that your mindset as it is right now is influencing everything you feel, think and see. So, putting the work into changing it can shed a different light on all that.
