How does resilience coaching work? Is a question I get asked a lot. I think the most accurate response is that it’s a process that enables you to get back to you. Being a human being means being born into your OG soul and then picking up a whole load of extras along the way, both good and bad. By the time we get to adulthood we’re a combination of ourselves + a whole range of other people’s thoughts, beliefs, habits, limits and fears. What the resilience coaching process offers is the opportunity to let go of any of what is no longer serving you, to understand who you really are at your core – and what you need to live happily and with a feeling of belonging and purpose – and then putting that knowledge into action.
Why do resilience coaching?
I understand that there is a time and money investment with resilience coaching, which means most people want to know what the return on that is going to be – i.e. why do it? I have pages of testimonials from clients on my website who’ve experienced how transformational resilience coaching is. But I think the main motivation for many is change. A desire to feel differently every day, to break out of habitual patterns and repeating situations and to feel more able to handle life – and to thrive at it.
What the reality of that looks like is going to be different for everyone. The process of resilience coaching can be one of:
- Building up confidence and self-belief and removing the limits that have been squashing that, such as imposter syndrome or an over-critical inner narrative.
- Investigating a feeling that you’re holding yourself back – or you’re capable of more – and taking bolder steps in life with the support of someone who has your back.
- Understanding loneliness or why connections feel hard and relationships are unsatisfying – how do your thoughts and actions contribute to this and how can you change it?
- Looking at the foundations of your life – your values, your purpose, whether who you are on the outside aligns with who you want to be and how you want to feel.
- Establishing new coping mechanisms – greater mental flexibility, reducing feelings of burnout and overwhelm, feeling more able to adapt and have higher self-esteem.
These are just a few examples of the way that resilience coaching works. Because resilience is something that touches so much of our experience of life, from how we cope with adversity to how confident we feel on a daily basis, this kind of coaching can be transformative across the board.
The accelerant effect of working with a resilience coach
I use a transformational model of coaching, which is all about giving you the chance to find the answers yourself. This is what makes the changes that happen during resilience coaching sustainable. You know what’s right for you – we all do. But you may just need a little help in identifying that, working out the best course of action and then doing it. Working with a resilience coach is like adding an accelerant. It provides you with:
Accountability. A regular check in to keep you on track and make the process productive.
Guidance. I’m here to encourage self-discovery, growth and considering different options – guidance is often in the form of powerful questions but can be suggestions, ideas and resources too.
Empowerment. My role is to help you nurture self-belief, self-worth and self-actualisation, whether that’s giving you permission to take a leap or helping to establish strong foundations from which to rise.
Challenge. An element of challenge can be necessary to help you to free yourself from negative narratives and limiting beliefs that have become habitual. It will never be more than you need and you can always say no.
Knowledge and experience. I’m an active listener who knows the value of both words and pauses – and how to use both to help you thrive. I have been doing this a while and have coached a very wide range of clients, from freelancers and entrepreneurs to parents, creatives and retirees.
What’s the process of resilience coaching?
It’s a series of small steps. Within that there can be big, powerful moments of realisation or transformation. However, most of the work is done by taking small steps that, together, add up to something incredible.
We always start the process of resilience coaching by looking at where you are now, where you want to be – and what needs to change to get you there. Once we’ve established where you want to get to (the best possible version of that) then it’s a case of identifying the steps required for change and doing what needs to be done to make that a reality.
Coaching is practical and action driven – we talk and then you do. It’s all about looking at what is coming up for you right now and what you need to do to move past it – and then doing it. That’s different from therapy, which is more focused on the past. Both are incredibly useful. And your past will inevitably be part of the resilience coaching process. However, we will look at anything that comes up from the perspective of how (and why) it resonates for you right now – and how to move past it.
