We are taught to play it safe. From the moment we start setting goals, well-meaning mentors, family members, and self-help books tell us to be “realistic.” They advise us to take incremental steps, mitigate our risks, and only step forward when we have a foolproof plan.

But I am convinced that the secret to building your dream life is biting off more than you can chew and then learning how to chew it.

When you look back at the most defining, exhilarating chapters of your life, how many of them started because you were perfectly prepared? Probably none. Most of the coolest things I’ve ever done started with me saying “yes” to something that someone else said was unrealistic – or which scared the absolute shit out of me. Playing it safe doesn’t build a dream life – just a predictable one.

Anxiety is a terrible architect for life

It screams that we need all the answers before we take the first step. And it tells us that unless we can see the entire roadmap, calculate every variable, and guarantee a perfect outcome, we shouldn’t even bother trying. Plus, anxiety demands absolute certainty in an uncertain world.

But the truth is, all you really need is a willingness to dive in and figure it out on the fly.

Capability isn’t a prerequisite for big goals

It’s a byproduct of chasing them.

You don’t build muscle by lifting weights that feel light and comfortable. You build it by straining against a weight you aren’t entirely sure you can lift yet.

The same goes for your capacity. You grow your capacity after you commit to the larger role, the bigger project, or the terrifying new venture. The pressure of the commitment forces your brain to expand, adapt, and innovate in ways it never would if you stayed in your comfort zone.I

If you’re currently staring at a massive goal..

… feeling your stomach drop, and wondering how on earth you’re going to pull it off… congratulations. You’re exactly where you need to be.

That paralysing sensation isn’t evidence that you are failing or out of your depth. It’s just the feeling of your old boundaries cracking open to make room for who you are becoming. Imposter syndrome isn’t a sign that you don’t belong in the room; it’s proof that you’ve successfully walked through a door that used to be closed to you.

I firmly believe that we need to stop waiting for the fear to vanish before we make a move. Lean into the deep end, trust your resourcefulness, and commit before you are ready. You are infinitely more capable of figuring it out on the fly than your anxiety wants you to believe. Resilience is an incredible tool for helping you step into the discomfort of action when your anxiety is screaming at you..in fact, few things make this process easier to navigate.
