Stress is often created for us by external circumstances.
But it’s how we respond internally that determines the impact that stress actually has on us. Whether it’s overwhelming or manageable. Whether we can steer ourselves through it or completely self-abandon. Whether we take things out on other people and end up feeling ashamed afterwards.
We can overhaul your response to stress through coaching, from how your nervous system responds, to your stress mindset stories and the emotions stress generates for you.
And you can start doing things differently right now by using this simple reframing tool.
Write down all of the thoughts generated by a stressful situation that start with “what if..”
What if I fail?
What if I’m fired?
What if I can’t earn enough?
What if no one likes me?
What if it doesn’t work out?
And then just simply write down the opposite.
What if I fail? What if I succeed?
What if I’m fired? What if I’m not?
What if I can’t earn enough? What if I earn even more than I hoped?
What if no one likes me? What if they do?
What if it doesn’t work out? What if it does?
Stress resilience requires perspective
Stress can escalate when we become hyper focused on one negative outcome. This simple technique forces you to open up your perspective and acknowledge that other outcomes exist. And are all equally possible at this point in time. Which is the truth.
Because right now you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. And accepting that is vital for stress resilience. But the more open you are to things that aren’t negative, the lower your stress levels will be, the more logical your perspective and the higher the chance that things WILL work out – because of the way this thinking will affect how you behave.
Fearing the worst to try and stop it happening is so 2020..
Anxiety isn’t a defence against anything. And living with stress isn’t your only choice. You can build your stress resilience to make life easier to navigate and to improve your daily experience.
